Ingredients
Beef and Vegetables
- 1 ½ lbs flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tbsp frying oil
- 1 cup broccoli florets
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds, for serving
Marinade
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Sauce
- 1 tsp grated ginger root
- 3 cloves garlic, grated
- ⅓ cup beef broth
- 1 tsp brown sugar
- 6 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- ⅕ tsp salt
- ⅕ tsp pepper
Instructions
- Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, mix 1 tsp brown sugar, 4 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp cornstarch, and 1 tsp lemon juice until the cornstarch dissolves. Add the thinly sliced flank steak and stir to combine. Let it marinate for 15 minutes to tenderize and flavor the beef.
- Cook the Broccoli: Heat 2 tbsp frying oil in a hot frying pan. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes, stirring frequently with a spatula until tender-crisp. Remove the broccoli from the pan and set aside on a plate.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a deep bowl, whisk together the grated ginger, grated garlic, beef broth, 1 tsp brown sugar, 6 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tbsp sesame oil, salt, and pepper until smooth and well combined.
- Cook the Beef: Reheat the pan with some frying oil over medium heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally until the beef is cooked through but still tender. Transfer the cooked beef to a plate and set aside.
- Thicken the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce into the hot pan and cook over medium heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
- Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the cooked beef to the pan and stir-fry it in the thickened sauce for an additional 3 minutes to absorb the flavors.
- Add Broccoli and Finish: Add the cooked broccoli florets back into the pan and stir everything together. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to heat through and blend flavors.
- Serve: Plate the beef and broccoli hot or warm, and sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for garnish. Enjoy your homemade beef and broccoli stir-fry!
Notes
- For best results, slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness.
- Adjust soy sauce and seasoning to taste for desired saltiness.
- If using tougher cuts of beef, avoid overcooking to prevent toughness.
- Broccoli should remain slightly crisp to provide texture contrast with the tender beef.
- Cornstarch in both marinade and sauce helps tenderize and thicken the dish respectively.
- Serve immediately for best flavor and texture; leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently.
