Description

Beef Manhattan, also known as the hot roast beef sandwich, features tender slow-simmered beef roast served on toasted bread, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and rich homemade beef gravy. This hearty and comforting dish is perfect for a satisfying meal that combines the flavors of classic roast beef with smooth mashed potatoes and savory gravy.

Ingredients

Roast Beef

  • 2 lb Beef roast (Chuck or rump roast preferred)
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil (for searing)
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 cup Beef broth

Gravy

  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 3 tbsp All-purpose flour (Gluten-free works too)
  • 2 cup Beef broth
  • 0.5 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Assembly

  • 8 slices White bread (Texas toast or sourdough works well)
  • 4 cups Mashed potatoes (homemade or store-bought)
  • Fresh parsley (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Sear the Beef: Heat a skillet over high heat and add olive oil. Season the beef roast with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Place the roast in the hot skillet and sear on all sides until browned to lock in the juices and develop flavor.
  2. Simmer the Roast: Transfer the seared beef to a Dutch oven. Pour in 1 cup of beef broth, cover with a lid, and simmer gently on low heat for 2 to 2.5 hours until the meat is fork-tender and easily shredded.
  3. Make the Gravy: In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour to form a roux and cook for a minute to remove the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Rest and Slice Beef: Once the beef is done cooking, remove it from the heat and allow it to rest briefly. Slice the roast thinly against the grain for tender bites.
  5. Assemble the Sandwiches: Place a slice of toasted bread on a plate. Top with several slices of the roast beef, a generous scoop of mashed potatoes, and ladle plenty of hot gravy over the top to soak the bread and potato.
  6. Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve the Beef Manhattan sandwiches immediately while hot and flavorful.

Notes

  • Using chuck or rump roast yields tender, flavorful meat after slow simmering.
  • Allowing the beef to rest before slicing helps retain its juices.
  • Texas toast or sourdough bread works best to hold up under the gravy without becoming too soggy.
  • Mashed potatoes can be homemade or store-bought for convenience.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by varying the flour amount or broth volume as needed.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and bread.
