Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1 cup white onion, diced
- 1 small green bell pepper, seeded and diced
- 16 ounces tomato sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons Kickin' Cajun Seasoning Mix (or store bought Creole or Cajun Seasoning)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 8 Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
- Cook the beef and vegetables: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the lean ground beef, diced white onion, and diced green bell pepper. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, until the ground beef is fully browned and no pink remains, and the vegetables are softened. Drain excess fat well, then return the skillet to medium heat.
- Add sauces and seasoning: Pour in the tomato sauce and ketchup, then add Worcestershire sauce, prepared yellow mustard, brown sugar, Cajun or Creole seasoning, garlic powder, crushed red pepper (to your preferred spiciness), and fresh ground black pepper. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Simmer the mixture: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 20 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent sticking and to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Prepare the buns: While the meat mixture simmers, toast the Kaiser rolls or hamburger buns until lightly crispy and golden brown to add a nice texture contrast.
- Assemble and serve: Spoon the hot Cajun sloppy joe mixture generously onto the toasted buns and serve immediately for a delicious and comforting meal.
