Description

This Chocolate Croissant French Toast is a rich, indulgent breakfast bake featuring flaky croissants soaked in a sweet vanilla custard and studded with mini chocolate chips. Baked to golden perfection, it's perfect for a special brunch or cozy weekend morning.

Ingredients

French Toast Base

  • 6 medium-large croissants (9.5 ounces/270g)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup (237ml) milk
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Chocolate

  • ½ cup (85g) mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Pan: Spray an 8x8 inch baking pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking and ensure easy serving later.
  2. Prepare the Croissants: Rip or cut the croissants into bite-sized pieces, then place them in the prepared pan in a single layer. Squeeze pieces gently so the pan is fully covered and packed.
  3. Make the Custard Mixture: In a large bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Assemble: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the croissants in the pan. Sprinkle the mini chocolate chips on top. Gently press down to ensure all croissant pieces are submerged in the custard.
  5. Soak the Croissants: Let the croissant and custard mixture soak for 1 hour at room temperature. Alternatively, cover the pan and refrigerate overnight. Occasionally press down to keep the croissants submerged and help them absorb the custard.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the pan from the refrigerator if chilled, cover it with foil, and bake for 40-45 minutes until the custard is fully set.
  7. Serve: Serve the chocolate croissant French toast warm. Optionally top with maple syrup or a dusting of powdered sugar for extra sweetness.

Notes

  • For best texture, use day-old croissants which absorb the custard well without becoming mushy.
  • Mini chocolate chips provide even distribution of chocolate throughout the dish.
  • Soaking overnight intensifies the flavor and ensures the croissants are fully soaked.
  • You can substitute milk with any dairy or non-dairy milk of your choice.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and gently reheated.
