Ingredients
Seasoning Mix
- 1 teaspoon smoked Spanish paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Aleppo pepper flakes (or 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon sumac
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Salmon
- 1 pound salmon fillet, skin removed
- Extra virgin olive oil, about 1 tablespoon
- 1 to 2 green onions, finely chopped
- Lime wedges, for serving
Harissa-Yogurt Sauce
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons harissa paste
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 lime, juiced
- Kosher salt, about 1/2 teaspoon
Instructions
- Mix the seasoning. In a small bowl, combine smoked Spanish paprika, garlic powder, Aleppo pepper flakes, ground cumin, sumac, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Stir thoroughly to blend the spices evenly.
- Prepare and season the salmon. Pat the salmon fillet dry with paper towels and cut into 1-inch pieces. Toss the salmon pieces well in the seasoning mix, ensuring each piece is evenly coated for full flavor.
- Make the harissa-yogurt sauce. In a medium bowl, whisk together the plain Greek yogurt, harissa paste, honey, lime juice, and kosher salt until smooth. Set aside to let the flavors meld while you cook the salmon.
- Sear the salmon. Heat about 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Arrange the salmon in a single layer in the pan without crowding. Reduce heat to medium and gently press the pieces with a spatula to ensure even contact. Cook undisturbed for 4 to 5 minutes until the bottom is crisp and the flesh appears more cooked. Flip the pieces and cook for another 1 to 2 minutes until the salmon flakes easily with a fork.
- Garnish and serve. Transfer the crispy salmon bites to a serving plate, squeeze fresh lime juice over the top, and drizzle with some harissa-yogurt sauce. Sprinkle with chopped green onions. Serve immediately with the remaining sauce on the side and lime wedges for squeezing.
Notes
- Ensure the salmon pieces are dried thoroughly before seasoning to achieve a crispy sear.
- Do not overcrowd the skillet to allow proper browning; cook in batches if needed.
- Adjust the heat carefully to avoid burning the spices or oil.
- Harissa paste varies in heat intensity; adjust quantity to taste if desired milder or spicier.
- Use fresh lime juice to brighten the flavors and balance the richness of the salmon and yogurt sauce.
