Description

This Easy Homemade Salisbury Steak recipe features tender ground beef patties cooked to perfection and simmered in a rich mushroom gravy. Ready in just 30 minutes, this classic comfort food meal is perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner and pairs beautifully with creamy mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli.

Ingredients

Steak Patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Gravy & Cooking

  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil (for the skillet)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 6 ounces sliced cremini mushrooms
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

To Serve

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Roasted broccoli

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the lean ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, beaten egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, dried oregano, and kosher salt. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Form Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty approximately 3/4-inch thick.
  3. Sear the Patties: Heat extra-virgin olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook about 3 minutes per side, until a golden crust forms. Adjust heat if patties brown too quickly. Remove from skillet and set aside on a plate.
  4. Make the Gravy Base: Reduce heat to medium and add unsalted butter to the same skillet with the drippings. Once melted, whisk in the flour until combined smoothly with no lumps.
  5. Add Liquids and Seasonings: Lower heat to medium-low and gradually whisk in the beef stock. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder until well mixed.
  6. Cook Mushrooms: Add sliced cremini mushrooms to the gravy and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Simmer Patties in Gravy: Nestle the seared patties back into the skillet, covering them with the mushroom gravy. Cover the skillet and cook on low heat for 10 minutes, or until the patties reach an internal temperature of 160°F, ensuring they are fully cooked.
  8. Serve: Plate the Salisbury steaks over warm mashed potatoes and spoon mushroom gravy and mushrooms over the top. Serve alongside roasted broccoli for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess fat and prevent greasy gravy.
  • Panko breadcrumbs help keep the patties tender and moist.
  • Ensure the internal temperature reaches 160°F for safe beef consumption.
  • To save time, use pre-sliced mushrooms and prepared mashed potatoes.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop.
