Description
These Greek Yogurt Bagels are a quick and easy homemade recipe that uses simple ingredients like all-purpose flour and 0% Greek yogurt to create soft, chewy bagels. With a light sprinkle of 'everything but the bagel' seasoning and a golden egg wash, these bagels bake up beautifully in under 30 minutes, making them a delicious and wholesome breakfast or snack option.
Ingredients
Bagel Dough
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus about 1/4 cup extra for kneading
- 1 cup 0% Greek yogurt
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 egg, whisked (for egg wash)
Toppings
- Everything but the bagel seasoning (to taste)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) to prepare for baking the bagels.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt evenly to create the base for the dough.
- Add Greek Yogurt: Incorporate the 0% Greek yogurt into the dry ingredients. Begin mixing with your hands; although the dough may initially feel wet and sticky, continue working it, adding extra flour tablespoon by tablespoon if necessary, until it smooths out.
- Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for several minutes until it becomes elastic and less sticky, using extra flour on your hands if required.
- Shape the Bagels: Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long strand and join the ends to form a circular bagel shape. Repeat for all pieces.
- Prepare for Baking: Place the shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly brush the tops with the whisked egg wash, then generously sprinkle everything but the bagel seasoning over each.
- Bake: Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 18–22 minutes, or until the tops turn golden brown and firm.
- Cool: Remove the bagels and allow them to cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes before slicing.
- Serve and Toast: Slice the bagels and toast them for 2 minutes to crisp up the interior before serving.
- Storage: Store leftover bagels in the refrigerator for up to 4–5 days or freeze them for up to 2 months. To reheat, slice and toast for a couple of minutes.
Notes
- Adding extra flour gradually helps manage dough stickiness for easier handling.
- The egg wash gives the bagels a shiny, golden crust.
- ‘Everything but the bagel’ seasoning adds a savory flavor and texture, but can be substituted or omitted according to preference.
- To keep bagels fresh longer, freeze and toast directly from frozen when needed.
- For a softer bagel, avoid over-baking and monitor closely towards the end of baking time.
