Description
This Ground Beef Cheesesteak recipe offers a quick and delicious twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak using lean ground beef, sautéed mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers, all topped with melted provolone or white American cheese. Perfect for a hearty family meal, it’s versatile and easy to serve in rolls, sliders, quesadillas, or alongside fries.
Ingredients
Meat
- 1 1/2 pounds Ground Beef (96% lean, 4% fat)
Vegetables
- 8 oz sliced Mushrooms
- 1 large (200g) White Onion, diced
- 1 large (150g) Bell Pepper, diced
Cheese & Garnishes
- 8 slices Provolone or White American Cheese
- Sliced Banana Peppers (optional)
Other Ingredients
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons Olive Oil, divided
- 2 teaspoons Kosher Salt, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1/2 tablespoon olive oil. Once hot, add the ground beef, seasoning with 1 teaspoon kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Brown both sides completely for 3-4 minutes each before breaking apart and cooking through. Transfer the cooked beef to a bowl and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil, then add the sliced mushrooms, diced onion, and diced bell pepper. Season with the remaining 1 teaspoon kosher salt. Cook for 4-5 minutes until the vegetables soften, stirring occasionally.
- Combine Beef and Vegetables: Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Mix well and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
- Melt the Cheese: Turn off the heat. Layer the slices of provolone or white American cheese evenly over the beef and vegetables. Cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt from residual heat for a few minutes.
- Serve: Serve the cheesesteak mixture on toasted rolls with light mayo and sliced banana peppers if desired. Alternatively, use it as a filling for sliders, quesadillas, or serve over fries for a hearty meal.
Notes
- Use 96/4 ground beef for a leaner, less greasy cheesesteak.
- Feel free to customize with other toppings such as sautéed green peppers or different types of cheese like mozzarella.
- Covering the skillet to melt the cheese ensures it gets perfectly gooey without additional heat.
- For a spicier option, add sliced jalapeños or hot sauce to taste.
- This recipe can easily be doubled for larger gatherings.
