Description

These Hawaiian Roll Sticky Cinnamon Buns are a delightful twist on the classic sticky bun, using soft and sweet Hawaiian rolls filled with a cinnamon-butter mixture and baked with a rich pecan caramel sauce. Perfect for breakfast or brunch, they offer a gooey, nutty, and buttery treat that's easy to prepare and sure to impress.

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 1 package Hawaiian Rolls
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar

For the Caramel Sauce and Topping

  • ¾ cup chopped pecans
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure it's hot and ready for baking the buns.
  2. Prepare the Rolls: Using scissors, cut a small X (approximately 1 inch by 1 inch) in the center top of each Hawaiian roll. Then cut each bun horizontally about two-thirds down from the top, keeping the top and bottom halves attached.
  3. Make the Cinnamon Filling: In a bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir until well mixed and spread this filling evenly over the bottom halves of the buns. Place the tops back on to sandwich the filling.
  4. Cook the Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, add butter, brown sugar, and salt. Stir continuously until the mixture comes together into a smooth caramel-like sauce. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
  5. Assemble in Baking Dish: Spread the chopped pecans evenly on the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour the caramel sauce over the pecans, making sure it spreads evenly. Place the prepared buns top-side down into the dish on top of the caramel mixture. Pour the heavy cream evenly over the buns.
  6. Bake the Buns: Cover the baking dish with tin foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil after the first 15 minutes to allow the tops to brown slightly.
  7. Flip and Serve: Remove the buns from the oven and let them sit for 5 minutes. Place a serving tray over the baking dish and carefully flip the whole dish so the buns come out with the caramel and pecans on top. Spoon any leftover caramel sauce over the buns before serving.

Notes

  • Cutting the rolls carefully keeps the tops attached to the bottoms, making spreading easier and the buns stay together better during baking.
  • If pecans are not available, walnuts can be used as a substitute.
  • For a less rich version, substitute half and half for heavy cream.
  • Make sure to remove the foil halfway through baking to get a nice caramelized top.
  • Letting the buns rest after baking helps the caramel sauce thicken and prevent it from being too runny when flipped.
