Description

A savory Mushroom and Swiss Burger recipe featuring juicy grilled beef patties topped with a flavorful sautéed mushroom and onion mixture, melted Swiss cheese, and classic seasonings. Perfect for a hearty and delicious homemade burger experience.

Ingredients

Mushroom Mixture

  • 1 Tablespoon canola or vegetable oil
  • 2 Tablespoons salted butter
  • ½ yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 8 ounces baby bella or white mushrooms, washed and sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon water
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper

Burger Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 ½ teaspoons seasoning salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushroom Mixture: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the canola oil and salted butter. Once the butter has melted, add the thinly sliced onions and cook for about 3 minutes to begin softening them.
  2. Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and continue to sauté for 4 more minutes until both onions and mushrooms are mostly softened.
  3. Add Seasonings and Simmer: Stir in the Dijon mustard, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes to reduce the liquid and fully soften the vegetable mixture. Remove from heat and set aside.
  4. Preheat the Grill: Light your grill and preheat it to medium-high heat, aiming for a temperature of 375 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Mix Burger Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, seasoning salt, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently using your hands or a wooden spoon until just combined to avoid toughening the meat.
  6. Form Patties: Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty slightly larger than your hamburger buns for proper shrinkage during cooking.
  7. Grill Patties: Place the patties on the preheated grill and cook each side for 4 to 6 minutes, adjusting time based on your desired doneness. For medium-well, aim for an internal temperature of 150°F. During the last 2 to 3 minutes of grilling, place one or two slices of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
  8. Assemble Burgers: Place grilled patties on the hamburger buns and top each with a generous spoonful of the prepared mushroom and onion mixture. Add condiments to taste and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the patties reach a safe internal temperature.
  • For juicier burgers, avoid overmixing the meat when forming patties.
  • The mushroom mixture can be made ahead and reheated just before serving.
  • Swiss cheese pairs well with the umami flavors of mushrooms but feel free to substitute with cheddar or provolone if preferred.
  • Toast buns on the grill for added texture and flavor.
