Perfectly grilled to golden perfection, these sandwiches make an irresistible quick meal for lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 8 slices rye or sourdough bread
- 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 1 cup grated Swiss cheese
Optional
- Thousand Island dressing or Dijon mustard (for serving)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Heat a skillet over medium-low heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become golden and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the patties: Season the ground beef with salt and pepper to taste. Form the meat into 4 thin patties, approximately the same size and shape as your bread slices.
- Cook the patties: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes on each side, until fully cooked through and browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, layer the grated cheddar cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, then the grated Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of bread, ensuring the buttered side faces outward.
- Grill the sandwiches: Wipe the skillet clean and preheat it over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches on the skillet and grill them, pressing gently with a spatula, for 3–4 minutes on each side. Cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted completely.
- Serve: Slice the patty melts in half and serve them hot with pickles or chips on the side. Optionally, add Thousand Island dressing or Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
Notes
- Use thin patties to ensure even cooking and better melting of cheese.
- Caramelizing onions slowly enhances their sweetness and flavor.
- Butter the bread generously to get a crisp, golden crust.
- If you prefer, substitute rye bread with sourdough for a different taste profile.
- Adding condiments like Thousand Island or Dijon mustard can elevate the flavor but can be omitted if desired.
