Description

A deliciously savory and sweet Pear & Apple Grilled Cheese sandwich featuring caramelized onions, melted Gruyère or cheddar cheese, and thinly sliced fresh fruit, all grilled to golden perfection on artisan bread. Perfect for a comforting lunch or light dinner.

Ingredients

Bread & Cheese

  • 8 slices artisan bread
  • 6 slices cheese (Gruyère or cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)

Fruit

  • 1 pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 apple, thinly sliced

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onions and cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they turn golden brown and caramelized, about 25-30 minutes. This slow cooking process brings out their natural sweetness.
  2. Prepare the Sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of artisan bread with the softened unsalted butter. On the unbuttered side of four slices, layer the cheese slices evenly. Then add a layer of thinly sliced pear and apple, followed by a generous amount of the caramelized onions. Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side out.
  3. Grill the Sandwiches: Heat a clean skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches on the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted completely. Press gently with a spatula to help meld the layers together. Remove from heat and let rest for a minute before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a sharper flavor, opt for aged cheddar cheese.
  • Ensure onions are cooked low and slow to avoid burning and achieve proper caramelization.
  • Use a non-stick skillet or griddle to prevent sticking during grilling.
  • For an extra touch, add a pinch of fresh thyme or rosemary to the onions while caramelizing.
  • Serve with a side salad or soup for a complete meal.
