Description

Experience the ultimate West Coast crab roll with fresh crab meat tossed in garlic butter, mixed with zesty mayo and fresh veggies, all nestled in a crispy, buttery garlic French bread roll. Perfect for a quick, flavorful seafood sandwich.

Ingredients

Crab Mixture

  • 1 pound cooked crab meat (frozen or fresh from two medium 2-pound crabs)
  • ¼ cup celery, minced
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise (Miracle Whip can also be used)
  • 2 Tbsp green onion, finely diced
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • ¼ tsp salt

Bread and Butter

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 6 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Instructions

  1. Prepare Garlic Butter Crab: Add 4 tbsp butter and half the minced garlic to a large skillet over medium heat. When the butter melts, remove from heat and toss in the crab meat to coat it thoroughly with the garlic butter.
  2. Make Crab Salad: In a medium bowl, combine the minced celery, diced green onion, mayonnaise, lemon juice, lemon zest, and salt. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Combine Crab Meat and Salad: Add the garlic butter-coated crab meat to the bowl with the celery mixture. Gently fold everything together, cover, and refrigerate to chill and meld the flavors.
  4. Prepare the Bread: Cut the ends off the French bread loaf and slice it into four pieces about 1.5 inches wide. Then slice each piece down the center without cutting all the way through, creating a pocket for the filling.
  5. Make Garlic Butter for Toasting: In a small bowl, mix the remaining 2 tbsp butter with the remaining minced garlic. Spread this garlic butter evenly onto both sides of each bread slice.
  6. Toast the Bread: Using the large skillet, toast the garlic buttered bread slices over medium heat, browning and crisping both sides until golden.
  7. Assemble the Crab Rolls: Remove the crab salad from the fridge and generously fill each toasted bread slice with equal portions of the crab mixture. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For best flavor, use fresh crab meat if possible.
  • Miracle Whip can be substituted for mayonnaise for a tangier taste.
  • Ensure the bread is lightly toasted to hold the filling without becoming soggy.
  • Adjust lemon juice to taste for preferred brightness.
  • Serve immediately after assembling for optimal freshness and texture.
